Term 2 Week 2

End of Term is in Sight!

Who knew that a piece of material could cause so much enjoyment. We had great fun trying out our multi use piece of fabric in all sorts of wonderful ways. Happy Clean Air Day 2020!

To celebrate the end of term. We are able to bring in a gadget/game tomorrow and can bring an extra snack to have in the afternoon. We can also wear what we wish but remember we have PE (so it needs to be suitable for that!

Another week almost complete…

We are here again, almost at the end of term now. Its been a quick but busy term. I think we will all be ready for the holidays when they are here.

This week has seen us doing lots of great things.

It was Maths week, so we took a different approach and took part in an escape room challenge. Which really got our brains working in different ways. Lots of problem solving and applying skills that we have built up but maybe not used in a while. Our task is going definitely perseverance. We definitely want to give up when things are hard but sometimes the ones we try hardest for are our greater achievements. We have also been progressing in our basic facts which is great to see. Links have been posted on our Google Classroom to play associated games for the facts.

In Literacy, we have been developing our understanding through answering questions. We are continuing to work on answering in full sentences but also really making sure we are answering what we have been asked in detail, especially if it is a two part question. We can be too quick to just give a basic answer that we think covers it rather than delving in and reading further. Next week we are going to be looking at ‘inference’ as part of our literacy sessions.

We are continuing to add to our literacy activities as well. You can see us here playing pairs. We need to list nouns and adjectives. Roll a dice and pick the associated noun/adjective that matches the number and create a sentence with them. The hardest part can be thinking of nouns and adjectives…

We also took part in the Ness Book Fest- reading for 30 minutes. Something that we should all be trying to do more of. The best way to develop your reading, writing and spelling is to read.

We have also been thinking about our inner and outer self. What we look like on the outer, but what makes us unique on the inside. We all have different emotions, thoughts, hobbies, feelings and likes and it is important to recognise that and celebrate this.

Plus, if the weather is nice, we get ourselves out for a runaround for 20 or so minutes. Fresh air makes everything better!

ScareCrow(n) Tattybogle Trail

Crown Primary School Nursery have been reading The Tattybogle and have been inspired to throw out an autumn challenge to our wider community.

We challenge you to imagine, design and create a Tattybogle ScareCrow(n). Like all the pupils in our Rights Respecting School, your Tattybogle is sure to have a unique personality, culture and style! We’d love to have them on display- either in a garden or window- on 31st October, Halloween.

The challenge for our families will then be to follow a trail and get socially-distanced ScareCrown-selfies to  log themselves on the trail.

If your household would like to get involved, please email crown.primary@highland.gov.uk  with what you plan to call your Tattybogle along with your name and address by Wed 7th October. This will indicate that you are happy for families to walk past your garden and have fun spotting our new residents! They should be in place by 10am on the  morning of 31st October.

Clean Air Day – Family Challenges

Thursday 1st October – Thursday 8th October

As we try to do our part in encouraging active travel and reducing pollution in our community, we would like to invite families to take part in this year’s Clean Air Day (Thursday 8th October) by working on a family learning challenge. There are two challenges to choose from, or you might want to have a go at both!

Family Learning Challenge 1

  • Walk up Ben Wyvis (1345m – around 7 hours)

    • Record the minutes that you walk each day and total them up at the end of the week

    • Can you climb and descent Ben Wyvis before the week is up?

Family Learning Challenge 2

  • Cycle from Dunnet Head to Mull of Galloway (395 miles)

    • If we split this down into daily chunks, it would be about 50 miles a day.

    • Add up all the miles cycled by each family member each day (you may want to involve your extended family to help out or join up with another household)

    • Record your miles cycled each day by each team member.

    • How close can you get to Mull of Galloway?

Round up of the week!

It’s been a short week but a productive one.

We have been putting our typing skills into practise this week by writing our stories that we had mapped out in our jotters into a Google doc. The more practise we get at this, the easier it will become for us. It will also help by practising on typing club at home as well to develop our typing skills. We were also very happy about all being on a Chrome book at the same time!

We are working on place value in maths; focusing on rounding, digit value, expanding numbers, problem solving, incorporating fractions of numbers to make 3/4/5 digit numbers, writing in words/numerals and continuing with our basic facts as well.

In literacy we are focusing on comprehension and making connections for this week and next. We are answering questions based on what we have read and we are also learning skills for what to do if we don’t know the meaning of a word. Before we read and whilst we are reading we are thinking of any text to text (film) connections we may have or any text to self connections we may have.

We also went outside for a little while  yesterday afternoon to play in that glorious sunshine! What an afternoon it was!

Another great week has been had. A little reminder for those who haven’t got indoor shoes yet, could these be brought in for Monday. Slip ons/velcro are easiest as they can be put on quickly.

I have a little question to ask- if anyone is able to donate white board pens or laminating sheets that would be greatly appreciated in our class. Thank you!

Google Classroom

Just sending a little message to ask that children are regularly going onto our classroom.

We are all signed up now and I have added links to Prodigy and Typing Club on the classroom. All children have accounts for these that have been set up, but in order for them to work at home, they need to be logged into their google account as they are linked to these accounts.

They have also been set up with Spelling Shed and SumDog too which we have been using in the classroom.

The more regularly that they log on to these sites the more familiar they will become and the less support they will need with it.

Thanks again!

Mixed Media

We have been looking at characters we know from the Mr. Men Show. We went into pairs/trios or on our own and chose a character that we liked and thought about their physical characteristics and their behavioural characteristics to describe them. We then had to draw a large picture of the character, focusing on sketching using little strokes of the pencil and proportion as the paper was large we had to make sure we were filling it.

Our task was then to use mixed media to create our picture. We had to use at least 3 different materials for this. They look amazing and I am really impressed with how well we worked together.

The final part will be to label them with our physical and behavioural characteristics of them.

Happy Monday!

Another day has flown by…

We start our Mondays with a little bit of gratitude and reflecting on the weekend. Ask your child what they were grateful for this morning. I love hearing about them.

Our afternoon was spent thinking about physical and behavioural characteristics of familiar characters. We are big fans of ‘The Mr Men Show’ in here so we used characters from here as our context. Keep an eye out for future work based on this.
